
Alastair (Al) Shephard Petrie
Alastair (Al) Shephard Petrie, 90, of Floyd, passed away on Thursday, November 29 at his home. Al was born on May 1, 1922 in Flushing, NY.
He is preceded in death by his parents David Sampson and Jessie McKinnon Petrie, sister Eleanor Petrie, brother Mack Petrie, and wife, Betty Waltzinger Petrie.
He is survived by his son, Lawrence Shephard Petrie and daughter -in-law, Linda Harrison Petrie, and ex-wife, Gladys Sumpter Petrie all of Floyd. He appreciates the support of his stepsons Jerry, Richard, Morris and wife Carmen Sumpter. He loves his grandchildren Craig and Katrina Knapp, Hillsville; Bill and Aundrea Knapp, Monteagle, TN; Kim and Chris Bond, Floyd; Amy and Will Wirt, Christiansburg; and Brad and Justina Sumpter, Christiansburg. His great grandchildren Cory Knapp, Leah Price, Gwendalyn and Abigail Knapp, Alena and Ryne Bond, Chloe and Katie Wirt, and Aubrey Sumpter brought him much enjoyment and smiles.
Al served in the 16th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron as a Technician Fourth Grade during WWII. He fought in the Black Forrest of Germany during the war. He retired as a construction engineer in New York after supervising construction on many housing developments, day care centers, and shopping centers and moved to Floyd with his wife Betty, where he enjoyed the gentler pace, the people and farming.
A memorial service will be held at Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd on December7, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. Interment will be held at a later date in Flushing Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Floyd County Humane Society or the Floyd County Rescue Squad.
